Goa Lawah, The Ancient Bat Cave Temple in Klungkung

Goa Lawah Bali

Goa Lawah Temple is an interesting and ancient bat cave temple in Klungkung, East Bali built in the 11th century by Hindu Priest Dang Hyang Nirarta, a Hindu priest from ancient Javanese times.

The cave is believed to lead all the way to Gunung Agung, but there’s a couple of serious deterrents. Firstly, the cave is believed to be home to Naga Basuki, a giant king snake wearing a crown. And secondly, the ceiling and thousands of noisy, long-nose fruit bats. You can clearly see thousands of bats in the cave flying around, though you aren’t able to go into the cave itself. This is a magical and sacred place and definitely worth a visit.
